Creation of Sustainable Jobs

The report finds that Benin is one of the least advanced countries in the region, with very weak development indicators. This makes it particularly important to take strong action to improve the situation. The report’s focus is on the various factors involved in creating or obstructing sustainable employment. These include, poverty, the environment, women’s skills, finance and human resources. The report concludes with a number of recommendations aimed at creating the conditions needed to encourage job-creation. For example, campaigns to promote rural jobs which have become devalued, positive discrimination to encourage women to enter the workforce and the extension of credit to rural farmers. Concerning the environment, the authors recommend measures from regulation of chemical use and toxic waste-disposal, to taxation of sectors which harm the environment and support to environmental activities.
